Request For DNA Testing for HC (Hereditary Cataracts)
Request For DNA Testing for L-2-HGA

In April, the Animal Health Trust began accepting cheek swabs for the above tests.

Unfortunately, the DNA that we have been able to extract from these swabs has not been of a consistently high quality to enable us to offer the standard of service that we set ourselves. We are, therefore, no longer accepting swabs for these two tests with immediate effect
(17 August 2006). Swabs already in the system will be processed.

We will accept blood samples (3mls in an EDTA tube) from the UK and Europe. Australian samples can be sent to Curtin Medical School for processing. Samples from other countries can be accepted only by prior arrangement - please contact dnatesting@aht.org.uk.
I regret that it has been necessary to take this step since I know it will cause inconvenience for breeders, particularly those outside Europe.

Please address any comments to nigel.holmes@aht.org.uk.

Q: Cathryn,
You mentioned at yesterday’s seminar that owners of those dogs who’s DNA was used in the research could get a free result – did I hear that correctly.? I assume that will mean only those who’s samples were used for L2 will get L2 results and those samples used for HC will get HC results. I also take it that results will need to be applied for.

A: If a sample was submitted, say, for the L2 project AND we tested it during the course of the research the owner can have the result for free, via an email, or for £5 if they would like an official certificate. And yes, they need to ask us for it - we don't send results out as a matter of course, just in case some people don't want to know. That is probably unlikely, but we have to be sure! If people submitted samples but we didn't use them for the research (the dogs weren't closely enough related to affected dogs for example) the owners can ask us to test those dogs, (we will still have the DNA) and will get the first test for a reduced price of £45.

*Due to UK Import Restrictions, blood samples cannot currently be accepted from countries outside the European Union. Breeders from these areas should contact the AHT for details.
