PRO REPORT SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER 2008

THE STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER BREED COUNCIL OF
GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

PRO’S REPORT ON THE MEETING HELD AT THE COACH & HORSES, LEICESTER RD,
MARKFIELD, LEICESTER, AT 11.00AM

The Chairman opened the meeting at 11.05 There were 12 clubs present, Down lands, East Anglia, East Midlands, Merseyside, Morecambe Bay and Cumbria, North East, Northern Counties, North West, Nott’s & Derby, Potteries, Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club and Southern Counties.

During the free discussion period there were a number of subjects discussed.

The Southern Counties delegates handed out a leaflet which they had produced “You, Your Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the Dangerous Dogs Act. The leaflet gave basic information on what you should do in the event of any problems which you may have with the DDA. The leaflet had been available at the clubs recent shows and had proved to be a great success as many people are unaware of what the procedure is if their staffie is seized. All the delegates agreed it was leaflet that should be available at all the clubs, and would take it back to their committee’s for discussion.

Southern Counties delegates also informed the meeting that a Claire Lingard has set up a rescue in the Wiltshire Area, her details are cvlingard@verdt.com or the www.verdt.com or telephone number 07787561621, anyone wishing to find out more should contact the above.

The Nott’s & Derby delegates handed out a business size card “Have You Been Tested Yet”, this wallet, purse size card had been produced to help prospective breeders to have their animals tested for L2-HGA HC & PHPV, on the reverse it gave the Animal Health Trust website details www.aht.org.uk and phone number together with the Nott’s and Derby website and the www.staffords.co.uk website. The card had been sent to all members of the Nott’s & Derby D SBTC and would be issued with the new members pack as required. All the delegates agreed it was an excellent idea and would take it back to their respective committee’s for discussion.

Nott’s & Derby delegate asked those in attendance if they had seen the website www.breedadog.com it is a site run by Pedigree, the site is to advertise puppies for sale and to register your litter and to receive a welcome pack. It is done at a fraction of the cost of the Kennel Club and the concerns by the delegates were that it maybe gives people who receive these registration packs that they are purchasing a Kennel Club registered puppy.

The PRO handed everyone a leaflet that she had copied following receipt of a letter from the Dog Law Advice Line, www.doglaw.co.uk , having been on the site she reported that she had found the site very informative and very easy to follow regarding various problems that occur within the canine world.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club delegates expressed their concerns regarding the recent RSPCA advert, highlighting unwanted dogs, most of the dogs on the advert were staffies or staffie crosses, further discussion took place on the increase of unwanted dogs and in it was agreed that we wouldn’t contact the RSPCA to express our concerns over the excessive use in the advert of the Staffie/Staffie Cross.

The Notts & Derby delegates brought up the proposed changes to the KC Code Of Ethics together with the KC Breed Health Plan, this was discussed in some detail and following discussion the East Midlands delegates suggested that there be an agenda item on Health Issues rather than it is discussed in free discussion. There would be times that Health Issues may take much longer to discuss than in the time allocated in free discussion. The delegates all agreed that in future the Health Issues would be an agenda item.

The Chairman closed the meeting at 2.30pm

The date of the next meeting is 12th March 2009 Markfield.

The date of the corresponding meeting is to be confirmed.
